Good Morning and welcome to the first of twenty four colour-themed posts that will be appearing here on the KNITSONIK blog in coming days! These posts coincide with the KDD & Co. Today’s yarn shade is Thrift; I think named for the flower, also known as sea pink.
Taking in my hand this lovely ball of dusky pink that, to my eye, has a touch of brown, I discover a picture I took in Shetland in 2017 of exactly those flowers.
But I can find Thrift here in Hastings, too.
For Thrift is almost the same colour as my favourite pair of trainers. And on the beach you can find shells with a touch of Thrift around their edges.
Here I was thinking that the painted bricks outside our house were red. But, in the right light, at the right time of day, they look a perfect match for Thrift.
Just like the flowers themselves, which are a mix of pinks and browns, Thrift seems to be pink but with a bit of butter toffee.
Closer to the house, a hydrangea bloom says “hi” to my ball of Thrift, and they are instant friends.
Inside the house I find Thrift in a cherished eyeshadow palette…
…reminding me of a phase when I hoarded anything that could be thought of as rose gold. Is Thrift a kind of yarny, mattified rose gold? To me it looks quite like a favoured roll of rose gold washi tape.
An old book that was originally much darker and a very different shade of pink has little areas of Thrift, where it’s been faded by the sun.
A favourite bowl is almost Thrift, as well.
Thank you, Thrift, for surprising me, and for reminding me to think of dusky pink in terms of brown as well as in terms of red.

I generally drift away from pink but thrift has reeled me in. I didn’t have to go far for a match – I took delivery this morning of my Christmas jammies (toast pink double sided brushed cotton bought because every other pair of jammies is blue). Sitting together they say soft and hope. Thank you!

I always thought myself not a fan of pink – think Barbie . However this is such a smooth pink, a subtle shade that is pleasing to the eye. Due to the fact I’m not a pink fan I don’t have much in the way of pink in my home space I did find this week a photo of a plant with soft fronds of pink blooms not a match but a companion to this first foray into a changing mind about the benefits of pink.
Yes I think sometimes not liking one particular aspect of a colour can put us off the whole! Yet there are so many dimensions to any colour that normally even if we don’t love a colour in one of its aspects, there’ll be another that really resonates with us. For example, not liking Barbie pink, but finding Thrift really lovely to look at!
Thrift was a nice start and I’m looking forward to work with it. Pink is a rarer colour here at the North Sea, but it matches my rose quartz earrings, some winterly sunrises on cold mornings and a lovely polka dotted sweater in my closet.
It reminds me of rose quartz as well.
I was sure this colour was not for me – and then I went looking and found I have a favourite linen frock that’s a great match, and then a scarf with a matching stripe… and even one of my lavenders (it’s early summer here in NZ) wanted to say hello. I am having to rethink my assumptions about this colour!
Isn’t it funny how we can have this idea we don’t like a certain colour, but then find we actually have a lot of it in our life… so that subconsciously on some level we do actually like it?!

exactly the color of my lips (without lipstick). i do adore muted pinks!
I am not a fan of pink, but a dusty pink is nice. It is a more natural shade. It reminds me of roses when they begin to fade but still have that special magic which nature brings. The brown part of it reminds me of cocoa, that pink brown colouring which chocolate ice cream and hot chocolate can have. Also, a touch of chai.

What lovely photos! I just opened my first calendar offering and I love this shade of pink! As a little girl, my mom dressed me in pink a lot so I grew to hate the color. But in adulthood I’ve grown to appreciate it. I too love rose gold, and I love this shade of yarn — not too obvious a “girly” pink, but a pink with some beautiful depth to it!
Isn’t it interesting how many pinks there are, and how we have different associations with the various aspects of the same colour.

I love me some dusky pink! Even so, it was a wonderful surprise to find that quite a few of the pinky things I own are not quite THIS COLOUR. It’s such an exciting shade; covering a spectrum of dusky pink, a sort of mid-red area, and something at the very edge of brown (at least to my eyes).
