22. Gold Star

What does Gold Star ⭐ mean to you?
For me Gold Star ⭐ means a joyous burst of glowy commendation. I love appropriating it from the star-charts of my childhood to celebrate successes in the fullest sense, and to use as motivation, too.

A sheet of gold star stickers on the table

Gold Star ⭐ for getting out of bed.
Gold Star ⭐ for getting dressed / brushing teeth.
Gold Star ⭐ for finishing something.
Gold Star ⭐ for taking a nap when needed.
Gold Star ⭐ for trying something new and scary.
Gold Star ⭐ for embracing a mistake as a learning opportunity.
Gold Star ⭐ for making something – anything.

Gold Star ⭐ is there when we need acknowledgement or motivation.

Not as a dangling carrot to make us DO BETTER AT CAPITALISM but as a kindness for surviving systems that are so often unkind. I use Gold Star ⭐ for celebrating and redefining success BEYOND productivity, money, followers etc. and to keep me going when I’m finding things hard.

For example…

Gold Star ⭐ for finding ways to do The Artists Way that accommodate my neurodiversity.
Gold Star ⭐ for exploring new ways to manage my awful relationship with my phone.
Gold Star ⭐ for napping yesterday even though there were things I needed to do.

We can use Gold Stars ⭐ to acknowledge the people around us, too

Gold Star ⭐ Toasties & Co. for your magic blue haven in Hastings and for having the best warm toasties for cold winter days.
Gold Star ⭐ Lucia Scazzocchio for creating a sonic arts + storytelling festival full of heart + hope.
Gold Star ⭐ Anna of Heardinlondon for the work and empathy you put into yesterday’s workshop.
Gold Star ⭐ Afri-Co-Lab for the generosity of Open House Wednesdays and Khadija for holding the space so warmly.

I could add many more but will ask you, instead, who gets a Gold Star ⭐ in your world, and how will you acknowledge yourself with one today?

  1. I get one for finishing the awful skirt that I had to rip out 3 times in order for it to fit! Yay I persevered and it’s done! Now I can wear it. (and it did turn out nicely)

    1. Well Done! It’s such a mission sometimes to crack on and finish something – especially when you’ve had to keep on ripping it out. Congratulations for finishing and not being defeated by the process.
